What’s Going on in
Our Catholic Schools?

During the past month disturbing reports have come in concerning St Xavier, Trinity, and Presentation High Schools and Bellarmine University.

St. Xavier

Several parents of St. X sophomores were concerned when they discovered that the sophomore retreat would be put on by a committee of St. William’s parish.

As most people are aware, St. William’s is one of the most outrageously liberal parishes in the diocese. Numerous reports in this publication and others have documented the liturgical abuses at St. William. (A quick check of the church’s web site proves the abuses are currently continuing.)

According to parents, Catherine Reynolds, wife of Archdiocese Chancellor Brian Reynolds, is in charge of the sophomore retreat. Sharon Benton, Pastoral Administrator of St William, is second in command to Brian Reynolds at the Chancery. She serves as one on the 3-member Pastoral Council of the Archdiocese along with Mr. Reynolds and Archbishop Kelly.

Inquires at the school attempted to assure parents that St. Xavier was "in complete control" of the retreat. Surely a more suitable place and more suitable leadership could be found for this top-notch Catholic School’s "religious" retreats.

Trinity

Parents report that a teacher at this Catholic school has caused some students to believe the he personally is pro-choice (translated – in favor of the choice to kill one’s child).

Parents are addressing this issue. Information will be forwarded as it becomes available.

Presentation Academy

This all girls’ Catholic school recently presented an award to a local woman who is living openly with her lesbian lover. The same woman was the first person appointed by Archbishop Kelly to his task force formed to address the sexual abuse scandal.

Since Catholic teaching continues to tell us that homosexual activity is "disordered" and sinful, what message do the girls at Presentation receive when an active lesbian is presented an award from a Catholic school?

Bellarmine University

An October 10th memo from Dr. Allison to staff and students at Bellarmine University announced "National Coming Out Day"

"The Human Rights Campaign has a great website about coming out. It answers questions, has good articles, and even talks about straight people needing to come out as allies in support (of) gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals."

The lengthy memo explains "Safe Zone" training.

What is "Safe Zone"? According to the memo, it is an organization for anyone of any sexual orientation…. ("yes this includes people who are exclusively attracted to members of the opposite sex as well as those who are attracted exclusively to the same sex and everyone in between) can be in safe zone as long as they are willing and able to be an ally."

The memo goes on to explain that "being an ally on lesbian/gay/bisexual issues is the process of working to develop individual attitudes and a culture in which lesbians, gays and bisexuals feel that they matter. The work of the "Safe Zone" is motivated by "an enlightened self-interest to end homophobia and heterosexism."

People on campus are encouraged to wear the rainbow triangle as a symbol of someone who is an ally. "In displaying the triangle we are saying "that it is safe to be who you are."

When local Catholics are asked to donate to the fund for Catholic Higher Education, Bellarmine claims to be a "Catholic" University.

Perhaps it is naïve to ask – Shouldn’t a Catholic University promote Catholic values?
